NBER patents data file
Bronwyn H. Hall, University of California
at Berkeley
This website hosts the NBER Patent Citations Data Files created by
Jaffe, Trajtenberg, and myself with help from researchers at the NBER and
Case Western Reserve University. Documentation is also available:
Hall, Bronwyn H., Adam B. Jaffe, and Manuel Trajtenberg. "The
NBER Patent Citations Data File: Lessons, Insights, and Methodological
Tools," UC Berkeley, Brandeis University, Tel Aviv University, and
NBER. August 2001.
There are two files:
-
pat63_99: all U.S. utility patents granted between 1963 and 1999.
-
cite75_99: all citations made by U.S. utility patents to other U.S. utility
patents between 1975 and 1999 (this file is simply pairs of patent numbers).
-
compustat: the file of matches between patenting organization names and
Compustat firm names that is described in the documentation.
-
coname: the list of patenting organizations and numbers (for matching to
pat63_99 by assignee).
The files are available in multiple formats:
WARNING: On pat63_99, both cmade (citations
made) and creceive (citations received) are coded as missing
when they should be zero. You should recode them before using these variables.
